Innovative fuel cells and the art of traditional beer brewing
The combination of the traditional art of beer brewing and innovative energy technology at the Füchschen Brewery in Düsseldorf has attracted attention throughout Germany. The 155-year-old traditional business has been generating electrical energy and warm water, which is used in different areas as required, with the help of a fuel cell since July 2002. The project has received great support from customers and from the manufacturer alike as well as from EnBW's partner, the Stadtwerke Düsseldorf (municipal services).
The field test in the brewery started in July 2002 and was continued in May 2003 with the commissioning of a more advanced aggregate. The reliability of the PEM fuel cell is being improved continuously. To cope with peak loads, two gas boilers are available. A control system - the energy manager - guarantees and regulates operation of the fuel cell and auxiliary devices.
