Detlef Schmidt in future responsible for marketing and sales at EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG

Karlsruhe. Dr. h.c. Detlef Schmidt (58), currently the Management Board member in charge of sales and marketing at SkodaAuto in Mlada Boleslav, has accepted the unanimous decision of the Supervisory Board to appoint him to the Management Board of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG. Schmidt is expected to assume responsibility for the new Marketing and Sales business area on the Management Board with effect from July 1, 2003.Karlsruhe.

The new allocation of business areas will expand the segment headed by Pierre Lederer. He will in future be responsible for the central "Operations" area, which will coordinate production, trading, products and prices to underpin optimisation of the energy-related value added chain. Alongside Schmidt as "Chief Marketing and Sales Officer" and Lederer as "Chief Operating Officer", Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Hartkopf will continue to play his key role in the chain of operative responsibility as "Chief Technical Officer" in charge of technical activities including the reliable and cost-efficient operation of power stations and networks.

As of May 1, 2003 CEO-to-be Prof. Dr. Utz Claassen will also be in charge of corporate development, M&A and economic/political strategy, which were previously part of the "Business Development" area headed by Gerhard Jochum. The areas of responsibility of Personnel Director Dr. Bernhard Beck and CFO Dr. Bernd Balzereit will not be affected by the reallocation of business areas on the Management Board.

The appointment of Schmidt and the restructuring of business areas took place at the request and recommendation of future CEO Claassen, who hopes that these decisions will generate important structural, operative and personnel stimuli for the future development of the Group. Schmidt and Claassen worked with each other from 1994 to 1997 on the Executive Board of SEAT in Barcelona and played a key role in the successful restructuring of the Spanish automobile manufacturer.

Schmidt, born in Döbern on July 11, 1944 has held a wide range of management posts in the Sales division of the Volkswagen Group since 1972. He was appointed Managing Director of SEAT Deutschland GmbH in 1986, where he succeeded in building up the brand and the sales network in Germany, achieving an all-time sales record in 1991. In the same year, Schmidt was appointed to the Management Board of SKODA, automobilová a.s. (now SkodeAuto) with overall responsibility for sales and marketing, where he oversaw the creation of a completely new worldwide dealership and service network. While still on the Board of Skoda, Schmidt was additionally appointed to the Executive Board of SEAT, S.A. in Barcelona in 1994, where he headed sales and marketing. Between 1995 and 2000, he was exclusively responsible for this business area as Vicepresidente Ejecutivo Comercial of SEAT, S.A. During this time, the sales volume of Seat, S.A. increased from 303,000 vehicles to over half a million units. Since July 2000, Schmidt has been in charge of sales and marketing on the Management Board of SkodaAuto in Mlada Boleslav. As of July 1, 2000 he was additionally appointed to the Supervisory Board of SEAT, S.A., where he remained until April 2002.

Schmidt, who lives in Prague, is a member of various advisory, administrative and supervisory boards in a number of countries. Alongside his duties at the top management level of the Volkswagen Group and in other industrial and business committees, Schmidt is also active in the field of scientific research and can point to numerous presentations and publications. In November 2002 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Brno Technical University (VUT Brno) in recognition of his personal achievements in promoting the integration of theory and practice.
