The International Securities Identification Number ISIN will eventually replace the German securities identification number. As of 22 April 2003, it will be used for stock exchange transactions. According to reports in the media, many institutes had reported that they would still accept the WKN parallel to the ISIN even after the deadline. The twelve digit ISIN number is made up of 3 elements:
- Country code: for Germany DE
- National identification number: old securities identification number, with three zeros added to it
- A one digit check digit
The standard is recognized and used world-wide.
