Our power stations and plants
In 2013, we had 13,802 MW of output from our own and partially owned power plants and procurement contracts. The electricity generated in these plants can be used to supply around 17 million households per year.
A broad portfolio
Our power generation is based on an efficient and environmentally friendly mix of different energy sources: In our plants and power stations, we use renewable energies (e.g. hydroelectric and wind power) and fossil fuels (e.g. coal and gas) as well as nuclear power and recycle residual waste. We operate and manage our power plant park with the aim of ensuring that our customers are always supplied safely, reliably, and economically.
In Baden-Württemberg, we operate several conventional power plants on the Rhine and Neckar rivers to supply the region with electricity and district heating. In 2015 in Karlsruhe, RDK 8, one of the most modern and climate-friendly coal-fired power plants in Europe, which has an efficiency of around 46%, was connected to the grid.
Hydropower has a very long tradition in our history: We generate 10 percent of our electricity from it. The larger facilities are located on the Rhine, Neckar, Danube, and Iller rivers. We also operate numerous small hydropower plants in Baden-Württemberg.
With the EnBW Baltic 1 wind farm, we are one of the pioneers in offshore wind power. We have been producing electricity in the Baltic Sea since 2011 and are currently building our second offshore wind farm, EnBW Baltic 2, there.
Until they are shut down, we will generate CO₂-free electricity at our Philippsburg and Neckarwestheim nuclear power plants at the highest safety level. Plants that have already been shut down will be dismantled in a safety-oriented and responsible manner.
Growth opportunities for renewable energies
With our decades of experience, we continually develop, build, and operate power generation plants and improve them in terms of safety, efficiency, and environmental compatibility. We master all aspects of the energy infrastructure. This makes us a proven specialist for the “engine room of the energy revolution”. We are actively shaping the energy system transformation.
For the future, we have set ourselves the goal of massively expanding renewable energies, which our subsidiaries are supporting with the expansion of their grids. By 2020, we aim to double the share of renewable energies in our plant from 19% to over 40%.
