Integrated reporting

Integrated reporting combines annual report and sustainability report. Since 2014, we have been informing our stakeholders about all sustainability activities in the integrated annual report. We follow the recommendations of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC; since 2021 Value Reporting Foundation) and strive for a holistic presentation of our corporate performance in one report.

Through our regular materiality analysis process, we ensure that all key topics from the previous fiscal year are included in the Integrated Annual Report. We present our financial and non-financial corporate goals in the dimensions of finance, strategy, customers and society, employees and the environment. We measure the achievement of our targets on the basis of top performance indicators.

Our integrated reporting also includes the non-financial declaration, the GRI Content Index and the TCFD Index.

GRI Content Index

The GRI Standards published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) are a comprehensive set of standards for sustainability reporting with management approaches and specified disclosures in order to assess an organisation’s environmental, economic and social performance.

The reporting of sustainability issues is based on the GRI Standards, including the Electric Utilities Sector Supplement. EnBW has reported for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2023 in compliance with the GRI standards. Our sustainability reporting also complies with the Communication on Progress (COP) requirements for the UN Global Compact and is based to an increasing extent on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We have continuously enhanced the identification of material topics in recent years, together with their integration into the strategy development process. Material aspects are identified on the basis of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) IR Framework and the GRI Standards for sustainability reporting. Further current developments are taken into account in the identification of future focal topics, such as the work of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) on climate-related risk reporting.

We have prepared all management approaches and indicators in accordance with the GRI recommendations. Following the concept of integrated reporting in accordance with the recommendations of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), we have opted for reporting on the basis of the Core option. We report on all material management approaches and indicators.

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)

The Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), established by the Financial Stability Board in December 2015, promotes the disclosure of climate-related corporate information and data. The TCFD calls on companies to analyse and assess the opportunities and risks arising from climate change. Its recommendations for effective climate reporting were released in June 2017. Also in 2017, with the involvement of EnBW CFO Thomas Kusterer, the TCFD published recommendations on climate-related financial disclosures. In July 2019, the TCFD Electric Utilities Preparer Forum released a report prepared in collaboration with EnBW on climate-related financial disclosure.

The TCFD aims to improve market actors’ understanding of material climate-related risks and to contribute to the stabilisation of global financial markets. In addition, the resulting assessment bases are intended to make it easier for market players to gauge the opportunities and risks of climate change.

EnBW began implementing the recommendations of the TCFD in 2017. This implementation was continued in the current financial year. The index also includes topics where we are working on the further implementation of the TCFD recommendations.

Case study on the EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy

In light of global warming, European countries have committed themselves to do more for climate protection. Both the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal view sustainable investment as an important starting point. A key tool is the creation of an EU-wide classification system for sustainable business activities – the EU taxonomy.

In line with our sustainable corporate strategy, we voluntarily published information on environmentally sustainable revenue, capex and opex as well as adjusted EBITDA for selected business activities in the 2020 financial year. In the 2021 financial year, before the reporting obligation came into effect, we then reported in full on the taxonomy alignment of our activities based on all of the final taxonomy criteria that were available at the time the Integrated Annual Report was prepared. In the 2022 financial year, we included additional economic activities in the areas of gas grids, district heating and electricity generation from gas and combined heat and power. Besides the compulsory information on the taxonomy-aligned revenue, capex and opex, we are also voluntarily publishing additional information on data on adjusted EBITDA and on capex, including the proportion for companies accounted for using the equity method.
