Stade – Dow Deutschland Anlagengesellschaft mbH (Dow Stade*), Stade - Germany and EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG- Germany, will cooperate for an integrated energy concept at the Stade site. Both companies have signed a corresponding agreement. The objective is to provide the Stade-site with reliable power and steam supply at competitive rates. This would contribute to the long term sustainability and development of the site as well as well as the subcontractor companies located there.

The foreseen cooperation comprises the development, construction, and operation of an integrated power supply system at the site; combining a state-of-the-art hard coal-fired power plant and a gas and steam turbine power plant with an output exceeding 1000 MW. The current Dow power plant will continue its operations until the new one will be in production.

The concept development will be implemented in successive steps. First study results are expected during the second half of 2008.

Both partners are determined to harmonise economic and ecological aspects of modern power plant technology in the best possible manner.

This includes for example combined heat & power (co-generation) that can significantly increase the total plant output by forwarding excess heat and steam to the neighbouring Dow production sites. This will greatly increase the site’s efficiency while lowering CO2emissions.

Dow and EnBW will explore using by-product hydrogen from the site to generate a portion of the power and steam requirements with no CO2 emissions.

The exceptional integration of power plant and chemical location makes it possible to optimise all synergies in the areas of raw material use, load planning, power-heat coupling, and environmental compatibility.

With annual sales of $54 billion and 46,000 employees worldwide, Dow is a diversified chemical company that combines the power of science and technology with the "Human Element" to constantly improve what is essential to human progress. *) Dow Stade produces a diverse range of chemical products using electricity and steam not only as energy source but also as raw material’. Most of the products made in Stade show significant growth potentials and help shaping a better future. E.g.: Combined with carbon fibres, epoxy resins can be used to build lightweight and yet robust construction components (CRFC). Polyurethanes help saving energy by serving as versatile foaming and insulation materials in the construction industry. The site and its contractors employ about 2,000 persons.
