What exactly is EnBW's Career Integration Program?

Annette: Ten years ago, we launched the Career Integration Program to help refugees and people with immigrant backgrounds begin technical training at EnBW. Interested candidates start with an internship. During this time, we get to know each other and assess whether their technical qualifications and German language skills are sufficient for participation in the Career Integration Program. If everything checks out, they can apply to join the program. This is followed by a one-year course at the vocational school in Karlsruhe, where participants receive professional language support. Upon achieving their goals, they are then accepted into a technical apprenticeship.

What is the goal of the program?

Annette: The Career Integration Program represents much more than just skills development and training. It stands for equal opportunity, responsibility, and solidarity. It demonstrates that economic success and social commitment can go hand in hand. Diversity is an integral part of our corporate strategy. Different experiences, cultures, and life paths enrich our company and make us stronger. The Career Integration Program is a striking example of this.

So far, 34 participants have already successfully completed the program. What does that mean for you?

Annette: We are very proud of this. Successfully completing a technical apprenticeship is challenging, especially when you’re learning a new language and trying to find your way in a new country at the same time. It’s all the more rewarding to see that these individuals have passed their exams and that most of them are now employed by the EnBW Group on permanent contracts.

What makes you personally especially proud?

Annette: I find it particularly moving to reconnect with former participants after a few years. Seeing how they’ve grown professionally, linguistically, and personally is something truly special. One moment always sticks with me: when you ask, “Where are you from, actually?” and the answer is “Karlsruhe.” That’s when you realize that integration has been successful and that people have truly made a home here.

Has there been any development over the past ten years that has particularly impressed you?

Annette: I am constantly impressed by how much motivation and perseverance the participants bring to the table. Many face major challenges and yet continue steadfastly on their path. Seeing how an initial internship can lead to a successful apprenticeship and, later, a permanent position shows just what an impact such opportunities can have.

What role do trainers and coworkers play in day-to-day work?

Annette: A crucial one. The program’s success depends not only on technical content or language support, but above all on the people who support the participants in their daily lives.

A good example is Oleh, whom you most recently accompanied as part of “Mission Energy” at the Forbach pumped-storage power plant. Oleh participated in the vocational integration program and was subsequently accepted into an apprenticeship as a mechatronics technician. During his apprenticeship, he now works in the mechanical workshop, among other places, and is gaining experience in a wide variety of areas—from the training workshop to the machine hall to the turbines of the more than 100-year-old pumped-storage power plant.

Such developments don’t happen on their own. Our trainers place great emphasis on fostering independence and initiative. In doing so, they see themselves less as traditional teachers and more as coaches. They offer guidance, ask the right questions, and support the apprentices in developing their own solutions.

Just as important are the colleagues on the teams. They help new employees settle in, gain confidence, and become part of the community. We hear from many participants that it is precisely this sense of togetherness that makes a big difference. Oleh also shared how important his team and working with his colleagues are to him. When professional support, trust, and a good team come together, the best conditions are created for a successful apprenticeship and a long-term career at EnBW.

In your opinion, why is the career integration program important for EnBW as well?

Annette: The energy sector needs people with diverse perspectives, experiences, and talents. At the same time, many companies face the challenge of attracting skilled workers. The Career Integration Program combines both goals: We promote integration and attract dedicated young talent to technical careers.

If you had to describe the career integration program in three words, what would they be?

Annette: Opportunities. Development. The Future.

How has the career integration program changed over the past ten years, and what would you like to say to people who are considering applying for the vocational integration program at EnBW?

Annette: Go for it and seize this opportunity. 💡

The Career Integration Program isn’t about perfection—it’s about motivation and a willingness to learn. Even though a lot of things will be new at first, you’re not alone. Instructors and teams will support you every step of the way. What often starts as an internship can lead to an apprenticeship and a permanent position at EnBW. 🚀

My tip: Stay open-minded, ask questions, and stick with it — it’s worth it!
