What does a typical working day look like for you?

Robin: I digitize incoming mail, scan it and forward it to the right departments. It might sound routine, but there are always new tools and technologies I get to try out.

Is there something that’s particularly important to you when it comes to deafness?

Robin: Please don’t say “deaf-mute” – that’s hurtful. Deaf people are absolutely able to communicate 😊. We speak just like hearing people do – simply in our own way. Good communication works when people speak slowly and clearly, maintain eye contact, and maybe even know a few signs.

Do you have any tips for colleagues on how to communicate with deaf people?

Robin: It helps to learn a few basics of sign language. And for meetings or events, a sign language interpreter should always be included.

Do you receive support during meetings or events?

Robin: Yes. I’m supported by an interpreter during team events and meetings. I also use the live captions feature in Microsoft Teams.

And what do you wish for the future?

Robin: That sign language interpreters become a natural part of the workplace, that more colleagues learn sign language – and that tools like video calls via TESS become even more standard.
