What has your career path been like so far, and what is your current job at EnBW?

Falco Engelfried

I already had several years of professional experience as a wind energy project manager when I joined EnBW in 2018. At EnBW, I was able to put my experience and network to good use as a land acquisition manager, and I had a perfect start with many of my own project ideas.

My job title hasn't changed, but I meet new people every day, face new challenges, and ultimately enjoy every new wind turbine that I've been able to contribute to.

How long have you been a land acquisition manager and what exactly do you do?

Falco Engelfried I've been working in the wind energy sector since 2010 and have been with EnBW for almost six years. My focus is on land acquisition, which means that we lay the foundation for every wind farm. Starting with a “green field,” we use usage agreements to ensure that we have the rights to erect wind turbines on these sites. This involves determining locations, constructing foundations, and ensuring that the wind farm can be built on the designated sites from a legal standpoint. The work requires a lot of mobility, especially in Swabia (Baden-Württemberg). One challenge is the limited amount of land that can be used, which is only available if it is designated as suitable in the regional or land use plan. Our target group includes landowners such as farmers, private individuals, and municipalities.

Do people contact you?

Falco Engelfried We approach people directly. Land is limited, which is why there are competitors. It's all about money and leases. The name “EnBW” helps to open doors and gain trust and security. In the end, people sign where they feel most comfortable. The basis of a wind farm is the contracts, which form the basis for the approval, and if everything fits, the wind turbines will be up and running five years later.

When you're on the road a lot, you probably see what you've accomplished, right?

Falco Engelfried Yes, but a lot has fallen by the wayside at the moment because not as much has been approved as we would have liked (a high tolerance for frustration is necessary).

Would you say that's one of the biggest challenges in your job? What are the others?

Falco Engelfried The biggest challenge is convincing landowners who are critical of wind power to support our project. You also need to have a certain tolerance for frustration, because not every project you start will be successful. Then you have to get up, shake it off, and throw yourself into the next adventure with full force.

How do you contribute to the future of energy in your field?

Falco Engelfried It's important work, because without the construction, the meadow would remain empty or be taken over by competitors. It's a daily struggle that I'm happy to take on, but it does push me to my limits from time to time.

Can you work from home in your job?

Falco Engelfried Since I travel a lot, mobility is important. I work from home from time to time, but working hours and location are crucial for me. I print out the written part at home or in the office beforehand or do it on the go. So it's more of a mobile office.

Was there a project that stood out for you and that you found particularly exciting?

Falco Engelfried We started a large project in the Swabian Alb two years ago. Although the municipality originally favored a different competitor as a partner, I had already done a lot of groundwork, so the municipality ultimately decided to implement the project with us. The other competitor would not have been able to build because we had already secured everything. Overall, it motivates me to work for a good cause.

What motivates you to get up every Monday and go to work?

Falco Engelfried Every new wind turbine is a step in the right direction. Here, free and natural energy is converted into electricity, which we all need in our daily lives. I am happy to be a small part of this wonderful thing!
