How did you get to your current position?

Melanie: I’ve been interested in energy supply since my university days. It motivates me to see the tangible results of each project once it’s completed. I love the combination of office work and on-site visits.

Netze BW has given me many opportunities for both professional and personal development — including a part-time master’s degree and leadership training. What matters most to me is that I’m valued as a person here, and that’s exactly how it feels.

Why do you advocate for Pride and diversity at work?

Melanie: Back in 2018, I was part of the team that organized EnBW’s very first participation in the Christopher Street Day parade in Stuttgart. That’s how the employee network Pride@EnBW was born — and I’ve been part of it ever since.

It’s important to me that companies take a clear stand and actively promote diversity both internally and externally. I want to help shape this cultural change — and we can really see it taking hold in recent years. I’m proud to be part of it through my involvement with Pride@EnBW, right in the middle of the movement rather than watching from the sidelines.

What does Pride mean to you personally?

Melanie: I’m part of the queer community myself, so I know from personal experience what it feels like to be reduced to just one aspect of your identity. I don’t want anyone else to feel that way. That’s why I’m happy to be visible as a role model. I hope that by doing so, I can help break down prejudices and encourage others to be visible too.

What are your daily responsibilities — what does a typical workday look like?

Melanie: I’m a team leader in high-voltage line construction. My team approves and implements construction projects in the northeast of Baden-Württemberg.

There’s really no such thing as a “typical” workday. My days are filled with meetings — with my team members and with other stakeholders. I deal with strategic planning and annual goals for line construction, team development, personal growth objectives for team members, vacation and invoice approvals, on-site safety inspections, and much more. The list is long and diverse — and that’s exactly what I love about my job.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Melanie: The variety! On one hand, I can dive deep into technical discussions with colleagues and face new challenges every day. On the other, I can focus on leadership — developing people, improving processes, and moving the department forward strategically.

But what I enjoy most is spending time with my team. During our one-on-one meetings, I always gain valuable new perspectives.

How do you bring diversity and Pride into your everyday work life?

Melanie: I make diversity visible in my day-to-day life. I’m open about who I am and use inclusive language, both verbally and in writing. I want to make it sound more natural — something people get used to hearing. My laptop is covered in colorful rainbow stickers, which always spark great conversations in meetings..

How would you describe the culture of diversity at Netze BW and EnBW — just a buzzword or real commitment?

Melanie: I think we’re on a great path, though not at the finish line yet. We’re working together on a true cultural shift — and that takes time and persistence.

A lot has happened in recent years: we now have a dedicated department for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, a company-wide diversity strategy, and the gender star has been officially adopted in our corporate communication. Our network, Pride@EnBW, also receives strong support and trust from HR to actively contribute to internal cultural change.

How are you personally involved in Pride@EnBW?

Melanie: Within the network, I organize various learning sessions and Lunch & Learns about topics relevant to the community — such as inclusive language, same-sex marriage, and rainbow families.

We create safe spaces where colleagues can meet, share experiences, and connect — both online and in person. The personal stories people share and the trust they place in me move me deeply every single time.

What can each of us do to create a work environment where everyone feels comfortable – regardless of background, identity, or orientation?

Melanie: Three key things come to my mind:

1. Show others that diversity matters to you!

2. Keep learning and stay open to new perspectives!

3. Be brave – speak up when you see discrimination!

And finally, what message would you like to share with your colleagues for Pride Month?

Melanie: Get involved! Whether in your private life, at work, or out on the streets – be visible, be active, and help make a difference.
