How did you come to EnBW?
Moritz Wick After completing my master's degree, I quickly realized that I wanted to do a trainee program. The opportunity to try out a wide variety of things at the start of my career was perfect for me. So I researched various programs – and EnBW had the best offer for me: on the one hand, the chance to work on the important transformation of the energy industry and, on the other hand, a top program that has a lot to offer.
What is your current position, and what has your career path at EnBW been like so far?
Moritz Wick: After completing the trainee program in November 2024, I now work in Strategy and Corporate Development and am very happy there. The network and the many insights I gained during my time as a trainee are also helping me here.
Was there a special moment or project at EnBW that has stayed with you?
Moritz Wick: There were many wonderful moments. One highlight was definitely my stay abroad at PRE in Prague, where I spent part of my program on a practical assignment. Working with colleagues there, experiencing a new culture, and of course spending time in a very beautiful city are memories that will stay with me forever. In addition to Prague, the other trainees went to London, Vienna, Paris, Istanbul, Milan, Sweden, and other places..
Moritz Wick: The content of my work changes very frequently, which makes it super varied. Otherwise, my days look like a typical office day: in the morning, I get an overview of the day, what's on the agenda and what needs to be done urgently. Then comes our “morning call,” where we come together as a team every day. This is great because it allows us all to stay in close contact – whether we're in the office or working remotely. This is followed by meetings, research, analysis, and of course creating presentations and briefings. It all depends on what needs to be done, and no two days are the same. As a trainee, it was very similar – but there were minor differences depending on where you were currently working.
Moritz Wick: The fact that I am constantly able to tackle new topics means that no two days are ever boring – and I learn something new every day. And the family culture, despite the size of the company. That's special.
What are the main objectives of the corporate trainee program at EnBW?
Moritz Wick: First and foremost, it offers a unique opportunity to get to know a large corporation with its diverse tasks and to gain a wide range of experience. What do I want to do after the program? What topics am I passionate about? What kind of team culture is important to me? And, of course, personal development. We have the chance to jump in at the deep end time and again, accompanied by workshops, coaching, events, tours, mentoring, lectures, etc
What are the main focuses of the program?
Moritz Wick: The focus is on personal development. The so-called transfer weeks are designed accordingly. These are the weeks when the entire trainee group comes together again between practical assignments. There is a lot of reflection here – about the past phase, but also about our own challenges and strengths.
How do the trainees choose their practical placements, and what opportunities are there to get to know different business areas?
Moritz Wick: The possibilities are almost endless, and the program management encourages you to try something unconventional. EnBW has so many different things to offer that there are definitely more exciting opportunities than just internships. There are basically two ways to choose an internship. Either you think about what you would like to do next yourself (or in consultation with mentors, program managers, buddies) and proactively approach a business area. In most cases, they will be able to arrange an assignment for you. The second option is that interested departments advertise internships that you can apply for. This is particularly helpful at the beginning.
Moritz Wick: The selection process went through several phases: After the application, there was an online test and interviews. The final stage is a half-day “Experience Hub” with a presentation task, an employee interview, and a group exercise. Throughout the entire process, emphasis is placed on creating a good atmosphere in which you feel comfortable. And that's why my biggest tip is: be authentic. The trainee program is looking for people who are open-minded, who want to develop and learn, who know what they find difficult – not the perfect employee.
What tips would you give to potential applicants to help them successfully apply for the program?
Moritz Wick: As I said, be authentic. Think about why the program and EnBW are the right fit for you.
Why should young talents choose the trainee program at EnBW?
Moritz Wick: Because it's a unique opportunity to experience so much in just under two years. Six practical assignments, blue-collar work, power plant tours, stays abroad, workshops, mentoring, time with the other trainees, the network that has been created—I wouldn't want to miss any of it. It offers a great start to your career.
