What is your current job at EnBW and what has your career path been like so far?
Thu: I currently work at Netze BW in supraregional project planning for broadband and electricity. Previously, I was responsible for project planning and construction coordination in the charging infrastructure division. I originally come from the food industry, where I completed an apprenticeship as a food technology specialist. After my apprenticeship, I was hired and worked as a shift supervisor for a year. After that, I caught up on my vocational baccalaureate diploma and completed a degree in electrical engineering and automation technology at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.
How did you come to Netze BW?

What does a typical working day look like for you?
Thu: As a broadband project planner, I mainly deal with the implementation of so-called “master plans,” approvals, and coordination with municipalities, various authorities, and construction companies. I also take care of construction cost calculations. The work is very varied and wide-ranging. It never gets boring. I like it because I can coordinate my own schedule. I spend about 50% of my time in the office and 50% on the construction site.
What are you studying and why did you decide to study part-time?
Thu: I have been studying for a master's degree in energy management part-time for two years. I enjoy learning and I am eager to gain knowledge. I also hope that I can use my knowledge to contribute to the energy transition.
What advantages do you see in combining work and study for your development?
Thu: I am currently very interested in the topic of hydrogen infrastructure. Netze BW offers me a good knowledge base. You not only learn the theory, but can also get involved and put it into practice.
How does EnBW support employees who want to study while working?
Thu: I was given four extra days off for the exams for the entire course, and I am also allowed to write my master's thesis at Netze BW. I particularly like the fact that I will get 80% of my tuition fees back after successfully completing my studies.
What challenges did you face while studying alongside your job and how did you overcome them?
Thu: You have to accept that your free time will be severely limited. Time management and prioritization are very important.
What helps you when you're feeling stressed?
Thu: Slowing down. Getting out into nature or meeting friends.
How important is it to you that continuing education opportunities are offered?
Thu: Although it's not relevant to the job, it's a big plus for Netze BW and EnBW as employers. As an employee, you feel supported.
Is there a particular project or piece of work from your studies that you are particularly proud of?
Thu: I am very proud to have the opportunity to have a corporate expert as my supervisor for my master's thesis. I really appreciate this opportunity and feel strongly supported by my supervisor and the technical experts in the group. They take the time to impart their specialist knowledge to me and provide me with valuable information for my thesis. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to my colleague. This is not something that can be taken for granted.
What motivated you to pursue a career at Netze BW?
Thu: Netze BW is the largest distribution network operator in Baden-Württemberg. The company has a wealth of expertise. It has a very friendly atmosphere. The EnBW Group has many interesting projects.
What advice would you give to young professionals who are considering studying alongside their career?
Thu: Do it! If you are prepared to put your free time on hold for a longer period. Start as early as possible. It's never too late. You can only win. Because if something is really important to you, you will achieve it. Even if it's not always easy.
How has your part-time degree program affected your career?
Thu: I don't have any concrete plans at the moment. One thing I know for sure is that I could definitely see myself continuing my education and working in the gas or hydrogen sector at some point.
