Dow and EnBW end cooperation on integrated energy concept for Stade industrial site
Stade/Karlsruhe. Dow Deutschland Anlagengesellschaft mbH, Werk Stade and EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG have revealed that existing cooperation on the creation of an energy supply concept for the Stade industrial site will now cease.
The aim of the cooperation between the two companies, which started in early 2008, was to develop a technical concept for an integrated energy supply that would combine an advanced hard coal-fired power plant and a gas and steam turbine power plant.
For different reasons, both companies are now stepping back from implementing this integrated energy supply concept together. However, future cooperation between the two companies on other projects has not been ruled out.Dow is still keen to drive forward an energy concept for an efficient supply of energy to the production facilities at the Stade site, and achieve its long-term goal of securing the international competitiveness of the Stade chemical plant by guaranteeing a cost-effective supply of electricity and steam.
Dow Stade manufactures a variety of chemical products for which the generation of electricity and steam is vitally important. Most of these products have great growth potential and help with the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies. For example, epoxy resin in combination with carbon fibres (CFK) is used in lightweight but robust components in vehicle manufacturing. Polyurethane in foam and insulating materials also helps to save energy in the construction industry. The plant and its neighbouring suppliers employ around 2000 people.
Dow is a versatile chemical company with a turnover of 58 billion US dollars and 46,000 employees. By combining science and technology with the “human element” Dow is continually helping to improve the quality of life all over the world. The company supplies its customers in around 160 countries with a wide range of products and services, linking chemistry and innovation with principles of sustainability. This enables Dow to provide clean drinking water, food and medicine as well to manufacture dyes, packaging and body-care products. On 1 April 2009 Dow took over the Rohm and Haas Company, an international specialist chemical company with a turnover of 10 billion US dollars in 2008 and 15,000 employees worldwide.
With around six million customers, an annual turnover of more than 16 billion euros and more than 20,000 employees, Karlsruhe-based EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG is Germany’s third-largest power company. Its core business areas are electricity and gas together with energy and environmental services. With an installed capacity of around 15,000 MW, EnBW is one of Germany’s largest energy producers. EnBW has its roots in Baden-Württemberg, but it is active all over Germany as well as in Central and Eastern European markets. For more information about EnBW, visit the website at www.enbw.com.
