EnBW Hires U.S. Offshore Wind Leader to Manage North American Effort

Boston/Hamburg. EnBW, one of Europe’s leading offshore wind energy developers, has hired U.S. offshore wind leader Bill White to serve as Managing Director of EnBW’s North American operation.

“For over a decade, Bill White has been among the most significant and impactful leaders in the advancement of offshore wind in the United States,” said Holger Grubel, EnBW’s Head of Portfolio Development, Offshore Wind Power Generation. “We are delighted that Bill is joining our EnBW team to lead our efforts in North America.”

And I’m impressed by EnBW’s commitment to work collaboratively with local communities and fishermen to bring clean and cost-effective energy to the United States.”

Most recently, White served as Senior Director of Offshore Wind Sector Development at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, where he led Massachusetts’ nation-leading efforts on the identification of offshore wind areas through collaborative stakeholder engagement, as well as transmission planning, environmental surveys, metocean data collection, supply chain, and workforce development initiatives related to offshore wind.

Additionally, White led the construction of the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, the first facility in the United States designed for the staging, assembly and deployment of offshore wind projects.

Previously, White served in the White House as a Special Assistant to the President in the Clinton Administration and worked at the U.S. Department of State. He also served as Assistant Secretary at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. White is a graduate of Boston College’s School of Management (B.S.) and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government (MPA).

EnBW operates offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 336 megawatts in Germany and is currently constructing two offshore wind farms with a capacity of 610 megawatts. The He Dreiht offshore wind farm with a capacity of 900 megawatts is due to be placed into operation by 2025 and will not require any subsidies.

EnBW will invest more than $5 billion by 2025 in the further expansion of renewable energies. Alongside Germany, the company will focus on selected foreign markets in the Asia-Pacific region – such as in Taiwan – and in North America.
