Baden-Württemberg is home to many species of amphibians and reptiles. Some of these are threatened with extinction and are on the “Red List” of endangered species. The “Impulse for Diversity” funding program, which EnBW launched in 2011 in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg State Agency for the Environment (LUBW), supports conservation measures for these species and their habitats. To date, 170 projects have been implemented across the state.
EnBW funding program “Impulse for Diversity”
- Creation of spawning grounds
- Upgrading of habitats
- Creation of egg-laying sites and roosts
- Biotope design and maintenance
- Interconnection of habitats
Natural and legal persons such as associations, municipalities, or private individuals who wish to implement measures in Baden-Württemberg can apply for funding under the “Impulse for Diversity” program. EnBW covers the material costs, while the applicant bears at least 10 percent of the project costs.
Project applications for 2026 could be submitted to LUBW until May 15, 2026. Implementation will take place from October to December 2026. A jury of experts will decide on the allocation of funding.
Rosenberg, 2016 – Forest pond for frogs and newts
The silted-up forest pond, a habitat for grass frogs, spring frogs, and protected newt species, was desilted. The measure secured the natural habitat and promoted biodiversity.
Maulbronn, 2017 – Habitat for green toads
A shallow small body of water was created on Elfinger Berg, providing the highly endangered green toads with hiding places and protection from predators.
Weil am Rhein, 2020 – Habitat for yellow-bellied toads and smooth snakes
Ponds and dry stone walls were created on Tüllinger Berg to provide clean water and safe habitats for the protected yellow-bellied toads and smooth snakes. Volunteers supported the project.
Creation of stepping stone habitats for amphibians to connect biotopes in Sandtorfer Bruch 2021
In Sandtorfer Bruch, a former moor in the north of Mannheim, high water levels create pressure water pools that serve as breeding grounds for amphibian species. As part of the project, additional stepping stone habitats in the form of depressions were created there.
