Successful Transfer of Auctions at Swiss Northern Borders to CASC.EU
Dortmund / Stuttgart / Frick / Vienna / Luxemburg, 07/03/2011 – Transmission system operators Amprion and EnBW TNG in Germany, Swissgrid in Switzerland and APG in Austria completed the transfer of explicit auctions at the Germany-Switzerland and Austria-Switzerland borders (Swiss Northern Borders) to CASC.EU on 28/02/2011. The first auctions for March 2011 have already been conducted successfully.
The transfer of explicit auctions at the Swiss Northern Borders to CASC.EU is a further step towards an integrated European internal electricity market. As the next step, the transmission system operators are attempting, together with their partners, to harmonise the auction rules for explicit auctions at all borders of the CWE region (Central Western Europe) and the CSE region (Central Southern Europe).
About the partners
Amprion GmbH operates Germany's longest extra-high voltage grid, with a circuit length of 11,000 km, and is an important transmission systems operator in Europe. The Amprion grid supplies power to a population of over 27 million from Lower Saxony to the Alps. As an innovative service provider, Amprion provides industrial customers and network partners with maximum security of supply. Its network, with voltage levels of 380,000 and 220,000 volts, is accessible to all players in the electricity market on a non-discriminatory basis and on competitive and transparent terms. Amprion is also responsible for coordinating the interconnected system within Germany and the Northern section of Europe's extra-high voltage network.
Austrian Power Grid AG, a wholly owned subsidiary of VERBUND AG, Vienna, is Austria’s largest independent transmission system operator and is responsible for 95 per cent of the domestic high-voltage and extra-high voltage grid. The APG network has a circuit length of around 3,500 km, which the company and its team of 430 specialists operates, maintains and constantly updates to the increasing demands of the economy and society. In close cooperation with the system operators in neighbouring European countries, APG is creating a powerful transmission network as the basis for developing an EU-wide, deregulated electricity market.
CASC.EU S.A. is a public limited company based in Luxembourg. It provides services to transmission system operators in the area of cross-border congestion management (for annual, monthly, daily auctions, and market coupling).
EnBW Transportnetze AG (EnBW TNG) operates the transmission network in the German Federal State Baden-Württemberg. This network comprises around 3,650 kilometres of 380,000 and 220,000-volt very high-voltage lines connected to the regional 110,000-volt distribution networks via 81 transformers. The EnBW TNG transmission network is integrated in the German and European interconnection system via 36 coupling points. At the borders of the control areas, it is directly connected to the networks within Germany as well as those crossing over into France, Austria and Switzerland. EnBW TNG provides all market participants with access to the transmission network at transparent and non-discriminatory conditions and ensures the reliable supply of electricity at all times.
Swissgrid is Switzerland’s national transmission system operator and as such is responsible for the safe, reliable and economical operation of the Swiss national grid. Swissgrid employs over 300 qualified employees from twelve nations at its locations in Frick, Laufenburg and Lausanne. As a member of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, ENTSO-E, it is also responsible for coordination and network use in European electric power exchange. The eight Swiss electricity companies Alpiq AG, Alpiq Suisse SA, Axpo AG, BKW FMB Energie AG, CKW AG, EGL AG, Stadt Zürich ewz and Repower hold 100% of Swissgrid’s share capital.
